some photos...

Back From Northern Italy

We just arrived back in Rome last night after a 10 day trip through Florence, Bologna, Venice, Vecenza, Verona, Como, and Milan...

Florence_

Probably my favorite destination of the whole trip, we arrived and quickly went out into the city. First we visited the Laurentian Library which was special for me because I had done an analysis of the library during Sophmore 202 studio. From there we sketched San Lorenzo church and went to see the David at the Galleria dell'Accademia.

That night I met up with my friend from home, Katie, who is studying abroad in Florence. We crossed the river and tried a restaurant called Casaligna. Best soup I've had in a long time!

The next day we were able to climb to the top of the Duomo (I was so inspired by the dome I had to get an umbrella with the dome printed on it, its awesome) and visited the Uffici Gallery to see the birth of Venus.

That night was steak night with the whole group. Florintinain steaks give the best US steaks a run for their money, so delicious.

Bologna_

I loved this city, it snowed the whole time we were there and everyone got into snowball fights along sidestreets and main avenues. Climbing the city tower was the best part, I slipped a couple times going down the stairs but Anna stopped me from falling to far each time (only because she was in front of me on the stairs haha I would just fall into her). Much of the historic city is lined with arcaded streets so you could take shelter from the snow easily.

Venice_

As soon as we got into Venice I ran out of the train station right up to the first canal to take pictures. It is definitely a city unlike any other. Navigating the streets without a detailed map proved difficult but we managed to find our way back to the hotel each time. Here we saw our first Palladio building on a small island off the mainland. It quickly became my favorite church, its simplistic brilliance was striking. The city was setting up for Carnivale so St Marks square was covered in scaffolding. After we all went up into the tower, I stayed for a bit longer and the other 18 students went down into the square and formed the CUArch symbol, I was able to get a couple good pictures before the cops came.

Vicenza_

One of my favorite destinations! It was not a tourist city, almost all genuine Italians. Palladio was Vicenza's home town hero and has many projects all around the city, the most impressive of while were the Villa Rotunda and Teatro Olimpico. We were allowed to see the interior of both; I don't think I have ever seen a more beautiful house or unique theatre. That night a bunch of us went down to the main city park and played soccer for a couple hours (solo calcio, solo calcio), the white team won.

Verona_

Verona was nice, We saw Juliet's balcony (more of a chick destination) and the Castelvecchio Museum, a redesigned castel walk through by Scarpa, amazing!

Como_

Como was nice but very slushy and cold. We visited an influential Terragni building called Casa del Fascio completed under Mussolini and a futurist monument by the same architect.

Milan_

The day in Milan was unfortunate, it was very cold and wet and everyone was starting to get exhausted (Jeez touring Italy, who would have thought it was such a tough job). However the weather took a turn for the better and the sun came out. We visited the Duomo, and the amazing Last Supper fresco by Da Vinci. I had no idea it was so large and destroyed! On our last day we saw Renzo Piano's contemporary Il Sole 24 ore and finally boarded a train and headed on home.

The whole trip was quite and experience, I have never been on a trip like it before.

Ciao for now, I will try and figure out how to put pictures up after I go out and grap an espresso.

Arrivaderci!
